Vaccine boost as scientists find virus has 'low shielding'

The corona virus is "hit and run" and not as well shielded from the immune system as some others - meaning it could be easier to develop a vaccine.
The scientists who made the discovery called it "very encouraging".
British researchers created a model of the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease, which they say shows how it disguises itself to get into our cells undetected.
The model, developed at the University of Southampton, displays the corona virus - named Sars-CoV-2 - as having several spikes sticking out from its surface, which allow it to attach to and enter cells in the human body.
Professor Max Crispin, who is leading the research, said the spikes are coated in sugars called glycans, which hide their viral proteins so to evade our immune systems.
"By coating themselves in sugars, viruses are like a wolf in sheep's clothing," said the professor.
"But one of the key findings of our study is that despite how many sugars there are, this coronavirus is not as highly shielded as some other viruses.
"Viruses like HIV, which hang around in one host, have to evade the immune system constantly and they have a really dense coat of glycans as a shield to the immune system.
"But in the case of the coronavirus, the lower shielding by sugars attached to it may reflect that it is a 'hit and run' virus, moving from one person to the next."
The HIV comparison is significant, as the research was done using special equipment previously provided by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery.
While COVID-19 is responsible for hundreds of thousands of infections and more than 82,000 deaths worldwide, researchers at Southampton believe their model provides some reason for optimism.
Professor Crispin explained that the "lower shielding" means there are "fewer obstacles for the immune system to neutralise the virus with antibodies".
He said it was "a very encouraging message for vaccine development", although any such product is still widely considered to be at least a year away.
The world's biggest pharmaceutical company, Johnson & Johnson, told Sky News last month it was confident it had formulated a COVID-19 vaccine and wanted to make available on a not-for-profit basis in 2021.
The firm hopes to begin human trials in September, which could mean mass production by early next year.
Back in February, the scientist leading the UK's research into a vaccine told Sky News that his team had made a significant breakthrough by reducing part of the normal development time from years to weeks.
Professor Robin Shattock, head of mucosal infection and immunity at Imperial College London, indicated that human trials could begin as early as the summer.

Pakistan , populous and multiethnic country of South Asia. Having a predominately Indo-Iranian speaking population, Pakistan has historically and culturally been associated with its neighbours  Iran ,  Afghanistan , and  India . Since Pakistan and India achieved independence in 1947, Pakistan has been distinguished from its larger southeastern neighbour by its overwhelmingly Muslim population (as opposed to the predominance of Hindus in India). Pakistan has struggled throughout its existence to attain political stability and sustained  social development . Its capital is  Islamabad , in the foothills of the  Himalayas  in the northern part of the country, and its largest city is  Karachi , in the south on the coast of the  Arabian Sea .

Afghanistan Refuses to handover IS-Khorasan chief to Pakistan

The Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) released this image of Abdullah Orakzai, also known as Aslam Farooqi Afghanistan on Saturday turned down Pakistan’s request to handover Aslam Farooqi, leader of the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP), an affiliate of the militant Islamic State (IS). On April 4, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), announced that they had arrested Farooqi, whose real name is Abdullah Orakzai, in Kandahar province. Turning down the request, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said Farooqi was involved in the killing of hundreds of Afghans, therefore, he should be tried under the law of the country. It further noted that Afghanistan and Pakistan have no extradition treaty and Kabul was under no obligation to hand over the IS-Khorasan chief The Afghan Foreign Ministry added that Islamabad and Kabul could work together to curb terrorism in the region. The Foreign Office had made the dem...

Omar bin Abdul Aziz

Islam, meaning surrender to the Will of God, is an eternal idea. Muslims assert that it is the pristine faith of mankind, subscribed to by the first created humans, Adam and Eve and confirmed by the Messengers of God, including among others, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammed. Islam throws a challenge to the community of believers to create a society “enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong and believing in God”. Islamic history is a perpetual struggle to meet this challenge in the matrix of human affairs. This struggle is continuous and relentless. Muslims through the centuries have struggled to rediscover the fountain from which the Prophet drank. The corruption that surfaces with time is challenged time and again and a corporal attempt is made at a renewal of faith. Hence, revivalist movements in Islam provide benchmarks from which subsequent historical events can be measured and understood. Omar bin Abdul Aziz, also known in history as Omar II, was the first rev...
